Even though pet rodents are fairly low maintenance, they still require some basic maintaining. This includes cleaning up after your furry friend, within its cage and out. Read on to learn how to keep your pet's living environment clean, as well as your own.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Empty the bedding in your rodent's cage at least once a week. Replace it with new, fresh bedding. This will keep your pet's home clean and help prevent disease and infection.

  2. Step 2

Wash your pet's food dish and water bottle every few days to keep germs and bacteria from building up. Use soap and water and rinse them thoroughly.

  3. Step 3

Scoop out wet areas from the cage on a daily basis. Keeping your pet's home clean is crucial for preventing moisture-induced infections and diseases. Your pet rodent wants to be kept warm and dry just like you or any other pet.

  4. Step 4

Give your pet's cage and toys a thorough wash-down once a month. Empty out the cage and wash it with soap and water, along with any toys or other accessories. Disinfect them with a diluted bleach solution, then rinse and dry them thoroughly before adding fresh bedding.

  5. Step 5

Use a cleaning spray, found at your local pet store, designed specifically for pet cages. This nontoxic spray will make cleaning your pet's cage faster and easier.

  6. Step 6

Wipe down cage walls with cage wipes, which can also be found at pet stores. These are good for spot cleaning and between-washing maintenance.

  7. Step 7

Keep the area around your pet's cage clean by regularly sweeping up the bedding and food that can get kicked out by your pet. This will keep the area looking, and smelling, sanitary.

Tips & Warnings
  • Opt for an aquarium rather than a cage with bars to keep bedding and smells in.
