How to Network to Get a Human Resources Job

Just like in any career field, the best human resources jobs are rarely advertised in your local newspaper. There is truth to that familiar adage "It's who you know." Most of the time, networking can be the best way to find your perfect human resources job.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Updated resume
  • Business cards

Step1
Update your resume and have it ready to go before you begin networking for a job. Get some business cards printed with your name and contact information so you can hand them out to any potential job contacts.
Step2
Join some social organizations or clubs. The goal is to meet and talk to as many people as possible. If you enjoy biking, join a bike club. If you like eating, join a supper club.
Step3
Join business organizations such as your local chamber of commerce or Rotary. Volunteer for committees and attend as many functions as you can. Again, the goal is to meet and talk to as any people as possible.
Step4
Talk to your friends and neighbors about your job search. See if they know anyone who is looking for a human resources professional. Ask them to keep their eyes open for you.
Step5
Attend meetings of your local human resources professional organization. The Society for Human Resource Management and the National Human Resources Association have affiliate chapters all over the country. Find a local chapter on their websites.
Step6
Remember to tell everyone you meet that you are interested in a human resources position. Networking within an organization won't help you find a job unless you tell people why you are there.
