How to Network to Get a Customer Service Job

The best way to find a customer service job is to network. It isn't a guaranteed process, but usually your friends, family and former co-workers and employers can refer job openings for you that they would apply to themselves if they were in that field or in need of a job. You will also be able to cover more ground this way and may find jobs you wouldn't have known existed without the help of others.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Good relationship with former employers and co-workers

Ask Friends to Keep a Lookout

  1. Step 1

Tell friends what you are looking for.

  2. Step 2

Ask them to let you know if they see help wanted signs or ads for jobs in the customer service field.

  3. Step 3

Encourage friends to refer you to employers they are familiar with. Even if they are only a regular customer at a store, their referrals will carry some weight. (After all, they will have to deal with you while they are shopping, right?)

  4. Step 4

Check out each referral. Your friends aren't doing the work so that you can pick and choose.

  5. Ask Family to Help Out

  6. Step 1

Discuss with your family your skills and your weaknesses.

  7. Step 2

Enlist your family's help to turn your weaknesses into strengths.

  8. Step 3

Let them know what type of job you are looking for.

  9. Step 4

    Request help finding job listings.

  10. Step 5

Talk to your family about referring you to employers they know, work for or shop with.

  11. Step 6

Give a report to your family members after checking out the job.

  12. Talk With Former Employers or Co-workers

  13. Step 1

Visit with former employers and co-workers you still get along with and let them know you are job hunting.

  14. Step 2

Convince them you are worthy of their consideration for open jobs or referrals to colleagues. Be professional.

  15. Step 3

Refrain from name-calling or anger if they refuse to refer you.

  16. Step 4

Get an explanation from employers and co-workers who refuse to help you. Maybe you can change that trait and become more desirable to hire.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be appreciative. Buy a card or gift for those who help you. Buy a bigger gift for someone who helps you get a job.
  • Remember that even telling you what is wrong or right about your skills, qualifications and attitude is helping you.
  • Don't be so picky that no one can help.
