How to Get Children to Read

Children need to be encouraged to turn off the television and sit down with a good book. Children can choose a fiction book that captures their imagination or a non-fiction book that teaches them new things. Here's how to get them reading.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Establish good reading habits in the family. Parents must set a good example and take the time to sit down and read a book, either in front of their children or to their children.
Step2
Explain to children the rewards of reading. Let them visit Reading is Fundamental, an interactive website that teaches children the importance of reading and lets them practice reading (see Resources below). Also, many local libraries have programs geared toward encouraging children to read.
Step3
Start reading to children at a young age. Make it interesting by changing your voice to go along with the story. Children enjoy the energy you put into reading.
Step4
Allow children to help you read as they develop their reading ability. Have children read out loud, and praise them for reading to increase self-esteem and motivate them to continue reading.
Step5
Sit and read each day with your children. Eventually, daily reading will turn into a routine that children enjoy.
