Step 1
Establish good reading habits in the family. Parents must set a good example and take the time to sit down and read a book, either in front of their children or to their children.
-
Step 2
Explain to children the rewards of reading. Let them visit Reading is Fundamental, an interactive website that teaches children the importance of reading and lets them practice reading (see Resources below). Also, many local libraries have programs geared toward encouraging children to read.
-
Step 3
Start reading to children at a young age. Make it interesting by changing your voice to go along with the story. Children enjoy the energy you put into reading.
-
Step 4
Allow children to help you read as they develop their reading ability. Have children read out loud, and praise them for reading to increase self-esteem and motivate them to continue reading.
-
Step 5
Sit and read each day with your children. Eventually, daily reading will turn into a routine that children enjoy.

on 6/8/2009 Good article. I wish every child would have someone to get them reading.

it is written by Emma Walton Hamilton (daughter of Julie Andrews) and she gives tips, fun games and activities, and all kinds of really great information on how to get your kids to LOVE reading and to continue reading.
