How to Choose a College Major

Some people know what they want to do from a young age and others need more direction. You can go to a career center and research careers by degree requirements or by salary but you'll also need to research a college major. Here are guidelines.

1. Ask friends and family about their careers. Go to a career center or a library to research careers by type of job and salary.
2. Go to a college and get a degree catalog to decide on the college major by picking a career. The catalog will give you the classes needed for the specific degree you choose.
3. Take the degree outline and place it somewhere in your house that you can see it everyday to motivate you to get the degree. You could put it on your refrigerator or on your bathroom mirror.
4. Choose classes at each semester or quarter change that are on your degree plan.
5. Mark off sections of your degree plan as you complete them. For example, your degree plan can outline itself with English, Math or Science categories.
6. Change your college major if you find that the degree plan you choose is not for you. Continue to ask questions of family and friends and other students to verify that the major you choose is the best one for you.

Tips & Warnings

• Some career counselors do not give you useful information. Ask fellow students to verify your counselor's information.
• When you enroll in a college you are contracting yourself to the course outline for that year. As long as you are currently enrolled and don't take a break you will not be affected by any changes in your choice of major.
• Taking a break might change the requirements for your major.
