Headboards anchor your bed in the room and can make it an interesting focal point of the bedroom. Traditional wood headboards can be somewhat expensive. However, there are many cheap options available to those willing to put a little effort and creativity into their bedroom decor.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Hang a group of framed matted black and white photos or framed decorative papers arranged in a grid above the bed to create a headboard that is the focal point of the room.

  2. Step 2

Stand hollow-core doors horizontally against a wall and paint them in a color that matches your existing decor or a contrasting color for a headboard that really pops.

  3. Step 3

Lean a decorative screen against the bedroom wall behind the bed for a cheap stylish headboard you can make in minutes.

  4. Step 4

Use old window shutters on the wall behind the bed for a cheap headboard. They can be painted or left bare for a rustic country or cottage look.

  5. Step 5

Place a tall wide bookcase behind the bed or hang a few wall shelves above the bed for a cheap headboard that is both decorative and functional.

  6. Step 6

Make a cheap upholstered headboard out of plywood, upholstery batting and decorative fabric for as little as a $150.

  7. Step 7

Hang curtains, pillows or tapestry panels behind the bed for a cheap headboard that adds texture and color to your bedroom.

Tips & Warnings
  • Search flea markets, antique stores and thrift markets for cheap headboard ideas of your own.
  • Carefully decide what objects to hang or place above your bed, especially if you live in earthquake-prone areas.
