Step 1
Know what you’re looking for. Think in terms of a personal ad: "Weekend warrior seeks mountain biking partner for moderately fast rides on Saturday mornings. Not looking for a boyfriend."
-
Step 2
Visit a local specialty store and look for postings on their bulletin boards or website forums. Ask about group workouts or organized training groups.
-
Step 3
Join a gym. Often you will meet one or two people who share your interests. If not, ask around.
-
Step 4
Hire a personal trainer. In addition to her fitness expertise, a trainer may have other clients looking for workout buddies.
-
Step 5
Visit an online matching site. There are several sites that help athletes find exercise partners.
-
Step 6
Once you find a good partner, keep him. Be a positive influence. Be timely. Discuss expectations early on (running speeds, distances, off-limits conversation topics).

on 8/4/2008 Loved it. I'm a fitness nut, and I have a few walking partners. It really helps. Plus, I teach step class, aerobics and yoga. I loved this article.

on 8/4/2008 Great article. You must be meticulous? This being the only one of your articles I have read, was/is one of the few where errors haven't jumped out at me. I don't purposely look for them, mind you. It just happens. For whatever this is worth, I also thought it was well written. Just what you wanted/needed/asked for.... a critic, right. My apologies if I shouldn't have posted this. I wanted to email you instead but when I clicked on email, the little window asked for your email address. Sorry if I've created any problems here. Didn't mean to.
