Things You'll Need:
- College degree, or equivalent experience
- Resume and cover letter
- Clean driving record
-
Step 1
Be aware that many healthcare supply companies will expect you to have a degree in medicine or the life sciences before you can become a healthcare sales rep for them. However, this isn't always the case. If you have practical or clinical experience in nursing or another healthcare related field, or a strong sales or marketing background, you may still be considered.
-
Step 2
Make sure that your driver's license is clean. A healthcare sales rep usually covers a large territory and you can expect to be on the road much of the time. However, most healthcare manufacturers and suppliers will insist that you have a clean record to reduce their own liability, especially if you'll be provided with a company car. If there's any doubt as to what's on your record, request a driver's abstract from your local office of the Department of Motor Vehicles.
-
Step 3
Organize your resume so that it highlights your objective of becoming a healthcare sales rep, while featuring your medical or sales background to the fullest. Note that if your experience in these areas is brief or sporadic, then you might want to consider structuring your resume in a functional format rather than listing your previous employment in chronological order.
-
Step 4
Draft a suitable cover letter to include with your resume when seeking a position as a health care sales rep. The cover letter should state your interest in the position, as well as briefly outline your background and experience in 1 to 2 paragraphs. You should also supply your complete contact information, even if this information already appears on your resume.
-
Step 5
Expect to spend a period of time "shadowing" an experienced sales rep before you become a full-fledged healthcare sales rep yourself. In addition, you will also be required to partake in periodic in-house training to keep abreast of new equipment and development in technology and research.
