Tutoring is a way to help students, with less than desirable grades, get up to speed with the rest of the class. This is usually done as a one-on-one teaching session. Subjects range from reading to math, to science and languages. Many certifications are available to provide training and proof of skills needed to apply for a tutoring job.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the job description carefully and determine which requirements you can either meet or exceed. Write an introductory paragraph in your cover letter that identifies the tutoring job for which you are applying. If someone recommended you for the job, mention that person's name in the introduction.

    • 2

Evaluate your skills against those required. Write the body of your cover letter showcasing how you can benefit the school or individual with your tutoring skills. Identify your educational level and any certifications you might have, such as the National Tutoring Association (NTA) certification for individual or program level training.

    • 3

Provide information about any discipline-specific certification you may have. This includes areas such as math, writing, reading and science. Describe your experience in the area or areas of tutoring listed on the job posting. Let the school or parent know that you are fully knowledgeable and prepared to teach the subject to the student.

    • 4

Include your experience in private home tutoring. This skill is easily adaptable to the school environment. Likewise, if you're making a transition from the school to in-home, the skills are much the same. Emphasize your ability to connect with kids of all ages and hold their interest while they learn.

    • 5

Describe the scope of your tutoring experience in relation to helping remedial students with special attention or providing advanced studies for gifted students.

    • 6

Make your final paragraph a brief conclusion of how your experience and training can work for the school or parent in need of a tutor. Express your appreciation for the time to review your resume. Ask for a time to meet for an interview.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always follow up with a phone call about 5 days after you send your application just to make sure it was received. This is a good time to reinforce your desire to come in person and discuss the application.

  • Use professional quality gray or ivory paper with a crisp, black font. Avoid using brightly colored paper and flashy fonts.
