Step 1
Follow the professional format to write a job cover letter. Make the first paragraph an introduction explaining why you are applying, the position applied for and how you learned about the counseling job. If a name is not listed on the job posting, make a call to the facility or company and ask for a name to send your application to.
-
Step 2
Open the main body of the letter with a statement about how your qualifications and experience meets or exceeds those listed in the job description. Highlight any special skills or level of experience that validates your statement. If you are applying for a school counseling job after working in a clinical setting, include your experience working with families as a main point when you write a cover letter.
-
Step 3
Include in the main body any information about your level of education and additional certification, such as the CACREP (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs) or CORE (Council on Rehabilitation Education). National certification includes the NBCC (National Board for Certified Counselors).
-
Step 4
Use your experience as a school counselor to advance to a director or supervisor counseling job. If you are moving up the career ladder, highlight your accomplishments working with children of all ages and your ability to work as a team player in a large system.
-
Step 5
Conclude your counseling job cover letter with a request for an interview to discuss how you can contribute to the effectiveness of the school, clinic or career center. Always include your phone number at the end of the paragraph, along with your email address, if requested.
-
Step 6
Refer to your enclosed resume as you write your cover letter to encourage the department director to read a full description of your skills and goals.
