Step 1
Determine which of the big game you want to hunt. Oregon has pronghorn antelope, black bear, Rocky Mountain goat, bighorn sheep, cougar, buck deer, antlerless deer, general elk and controlled elk. Each has its season and specific hunting restrictions.
-
Step 2
Plan to purchase the correct tag according to the species before the first tag date. If there is more than one hunt period, you must pick up your tag prior to the opening day of the first hunt.
-
Step 3
Obey the license requirements to hunt in Oregon. You must carry a valid hunting license at all times. Oregon hunting licenses are issued for a calendar year from January 1 to December 31, regardless of your purchase date. If the hunting season extends into January, a new license is required for the year.
-
Step 4
Get a big game tag in addition to your hunting license. The tag must be for the specific type of game, and it must include the dates and location of the hunt. If you are 14 years old or older, you do not need a tag in addition to your hunting license, if you're hunting unprotected mammals, birds and predators.
-
Step 5
Purchase the Resident Sports Pac License if you are an Oregon resident. This package includes the hunting license and tags for general or controlled deer, elk and bear. It also includes a general cougar tag and a spring turkey tag.
-
Step 6
Apply for a youth "First Time" tag if you are at least 12 years old by the time to hunt. You will receive up to 3 tags that include one each for a buck deer, antlerless deer and antlerless elk.
-
Step 7
Obtain an Oregon Disabilities Hunting and Fishing Permit if you meet the criteria to be considered disabled. This includes verification from your physician that you require some type of assistance to walk or you have a heart and/or lung condition considered disabling. Read the full disclosure on the Oregon Fish and Wildlife website (see Resources below).
