When you choose to hunt in North Dakota, you have one of the most diverse hunting grounds in the United States. You can take your pick of waterfowl such as ducks, swan, geese, coots and mergansers. You can also hunt small game such as dove, pheasant, woodcock, wild turkey and grouse. Big game includes moose, deer, bighorn sheep, pronghorn, elk and even mountain lion.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Permit
  • Hunting license
  • Social security number
  • Hunter safety certificate
  1. Step 1

Use trapping and snaring only under the appropriate guidelines and licenses. If you are a nonresident, you must be from a state that allows North Dakota residents to trap before you will be issued a license.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a combination license to hunt small game, furbearer and general game. You must be at least 16 years of age. A small game license for upland species can be purchased separately, if your interests are wild fowl such as grouse or pheasant.

  3. Step 3

Complete your hunter safety education in plenty of time to have your validation number when you apply for a North Dakota license or permit. You must have the validation number before your license application will be accepted.

  4. Step 4

Obtain a disability permit if you require the assistance of a crutch, wheelchair or any mechanical support. If you have a heart and lung disease that requires oxygen, you qualify for a disability permit. Your doctor must verify your medical disability.

  5. Step 5

Apply through the North Dakota Game and Fish Department for a mobility-impaired permit to shoot from a vehicle if you are disabled (see Resources below). You must select if you are a resident or non-resident to be taken to the correct site for making application.

  6. Step 6

Be advised that licenses to hunt wild turkey, elk, moose, bighorn sheep, pronghorn gun and deer are available in North Dakota only by lottery. Apply online through the North Dakota Game and Fish website (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • The seasons and regulations for hunting in North Dakota are determined after the game and fish biologists do a population survey. This identifies the over or under population of the different species, and hunting season is scheduled accordingly.
  • Your social security number is required for purchase of hunting licenses in North Dakota for the purpose of enforcing child support obligations and determining license eligibility. This information is available to law enforcement agencies as needed.
