Things You'll Need:
- Ammunition
- Hunter education training
- Hunting rifles
- Manitoba firearms permit(s)
- Manitoba hunting license(s)
-
Step 1
Learn about the different types of hunting permits available through the Manitoba government's Wildlife and Ecosystem Protection Branch. Contact them at (204) 945-6784 in the greater Winnipeg area or toll free at (800) 214-6497 from elsewhere in Canada or the United States.
-
Step 2
Complete any hunting education and safety programs that may be required. Depending on where exactly you're coming from, and how current your training is, the Manitoba government may recognize training completed elsewhere. Check with the Wildlife and Ecosystems Protection Branch if you have questions about the validity of your credentials in Manitoba.
-
Step 3
Apply for the permit(s) needed for the type of hunting you want to do. General hunting and fishing permits are available, and both residents and non-residents of the province are eligible for them. Permits are issued on both a short term and annual basis.
-
Step 1
Stay informed. Manitoba's elk herds have suffered a reduction in numbers in recent years, and the province is reducing the number of permits issued to hunt elk. A good source of current information is the Manitoba government's "Hunting Guide," which is available at no cost (see Resources below).
-
Step 2
Hunt only according to what is permitted by your hunting license. It is your responsibility to know all rules and regulations associated with your hunting license. Manitoba levies heavy fines on individuals who violate conservation laws.
-
Step 3
Load up your guns and head out to hunt. Moose, white-tailed deer, black bears and caribou are among the most popular big-game targets. Ducks and geese are popular with bird hunters, but be careful. Provincial and federal laws protect Canadian geese from hunters, and fines for poaching them are astronomical.
-
Step 4
Head to the far north of Manitoba for a polar bear hunting adventure. While such a trip is recommended only for hardy outdoorsmen, it can be a rare and rewarding experience.
