Things You'll Need:
- Ammunition
- Hunter education training
- Appropriate state-issued hunting license(s)
- Hunting rifles or weapons of your choice (plus applicable permits)
-
Step 1
Obtain a copy of the "Basic Hunting" booklet or the year's current "Kentucky Hunting & Trapping Guide." Both publications contain a wealth of detailed information you'll need to know in order to comply with Kentucky's hunting regulations. Both are available through any field office of the Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources.
-
Step 2
Make sure you complete a state-sanctioned hunter-education training program. Kentucky requires all hunters age 12 and over, as well as all persons born on New Year's Day from 1975 or later, to carry a valid education certification card at all times while hunting.
-
Step 3
Know the season start and end dates for the various types of prey (such as waterfowl and deer), and anticipate that they will shift slightly every year. The Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources releases updated hunting season information as dates are finalized for a given year.
-
Step 4
Apply for the hunting license(s) of your choice. General hunting and fishing permits are sold separately. Keep in mind that you'll need specific permits to hunt specific game, such as a deer hunting license to hunt during deer season. Non-residents may face restrictions in the types of hunting licenses they are eligible for.
-
Step 5
Hunt only within specified zones that are designated for public hunting use. Keep in mind that, in Kentucky, counties have a certain degree of autonomy in designating season start and end dates. Obey all "No Trespassing" signs you encounter, and do not intrude on private property when you hunt.
-
Step 6
Remember that quota limits apply to many of the types of game you can hunt in Kentucky. You will learn what these are in a given year when you obtain or renew your hunting permit(s). Obey them at all times, or you may be accused of poaching.
