Big game hunting is an exciting sport. Experiencing the great outdoors, bonding with family and hunting buddies and getting away from the rat race of city life are just some of the benefits of the sport. There are, however, laws that govern the sport in every state and stiff fines and penalties for those who don't obey them. Before you pack up your hunting gear, be sure that you know the correct way to tag big game.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hunting license
  • Kill tags
  • Ink pen
  1. Step 1

Purchase a big game hunting license from the Department of Fish and Game in the state in which you intend to hunt. Tags are attached to the license.

  2. Step 2

Remove your old hunting license from the holder and replace it with your current license. Accidentally using an outdated tag is a violation of the law.

  3. Step 3

Fill out all the information listed on the tag in ink after you harvest your animal. Make sure the information is legible.

  4. Step 4

Attach the tag to the ear of a deer or bear and the body of an elk. Attach turkey tags to the bird's leg. Make sure that the kill tag is visible for inspection.

  5. Step 5

Do not remove a tag once you have attached it to an animal. It must remain with the animal until it is readied for consumption or taken for mounting.

  6. Step 6

Transport the animal to the nearest check-in station. You will be required to sign a permanent kill tag. Some states allow you to check your game through a toll-free number or via the Internet.

  7. Step 7

Prepare your documents before taking game to a taxidermist for mounting. You must provide the permanent kill-tag number, checking station number and date of kill.

Tips & Warnings
  • In some cases, hunters are authorized to hunt without licenses. In such a case, you must still fill out a handmade tag listing the same information required on a tag held by a licensed hunter.
  • The rules for tagging big game vary from state to state. Be aware of the tagging laws in the state where you are hunting.
  • It is against the law to tag an animal that you did not legally kill. A dead animal must be left where it was found.
  • All of the parts of a big game carcass, except the internal organs, must be left intact until the animal is checked. Do not destroy the parts of the animal that identify its sex.
