On the west coast of North America, it is not always easy to find a place to cross country ski. The exception is Canada's Whistler, located in the province of British Columbia. Plan a trip here in the winter to take advantage of the many trails made available to cross country skiers.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Appropriate outdoor attire including 3 layers of wicking, thermal and protective clothing
  • Cross country skis
  • Boots
  • Poles
  1. Step 1

Plan your trip to Whistler between November and March each year. Though the length of the season may vary, you can expect the best skiing following the second or third snowfall each year.

  2. Step 2

Find nearly 17 1/2 miles of cross country ski trails, which will take you through the Lost Lake Park, past the Chateau Whistler Golf Course and around the Nicklaus North Golf Course. This trail, managed by the Lost Lake Cross Country Connection Corporation, requires a fee to use and rental equipment is available.

  3. Step 3

Ski at night through nearly 2 1/2 miles of lit trails included in the Lost Lake Park trails. These trails are open until 10 p.m. daily and may be subject to additional fees.

  4. Step 4

Access Lost Lake Park and its miles of ski trails easily by foot from the village. There are ample signs directly foot and motor traffic to where the trails begin and the ticket booth where you will purchase your pass for the day. The ticket booth is typically open from 8 am to 8 pm daily.

  5. Step 5

Book a guided tour of the trails at Lost Lake Park for your party of two or more. If you have a larger party, you can indulge in the "ski and dine" package, which requires a minimum of 6 skiers to participate.

  6. Step 6

Take on the challenge to the north of Whistler found in the Cariboo region. Here you'll find over 90 miles of groomed cross country ski trails near 100 Mile House, British Columbia. You'll find a number of winter resorts to choose from for accommodations in this historic location.

  7. Step 7

Discover Callaghan Country, just west of Whistler. This winter sports park features both Alpine and cross country skiing. Guests of the Callaghan Back Country Lodge receive free transportation to its many trails.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have your bindings checked by a ski pro before heading to the trails. You can perform some general maintenance yourself by tightening loosened screws, but a complete tune-up should be done by a trained professional.
