Apple crumble is a traditional British pudding which is basically sliced and peeled apples covered with a sugar and flour based topping known as crumble. The following recipe serves four people with a preparation time of 30 minutes.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 300g/10½ oz. plain flour, sieved pinch of salt
  • 175g/6 oz. brown sugar
  • 200g/7 oz. butter
  • Knob of butter for greasing
  • 450g/1 lb. apples, peeled, cored.
  • 50g/2 oz. brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp. plain flour
  • 1 pinch of ground cinnamon
  1. Step 1

    Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.

  2. Step 2

    Mix the flour and sugar in a large bowl, adding the butter gradually and rubbing it in to the flour mixture. Keep going until it resembles breadcrumbs.

  3. Step 3

    Put the apples in a large bowl and sprinkle over 50g of sugar, a table spoon of flour and a pinch of cinnamon. Stir well.

  4. Step 4

    Butter a 24cm/9-inch oven proof dish and cover the bottom with the fruit mixture.

  5. Step 5

    Evenly cover the apples with the crumble mixture.

  6. Step 6

    Bake in the oven for 40 to 45 minutes or until the crumble is browned and the fruit mixture is bubbling. Serve with custard.

Tips & Warnings
  • A crumble can be made with most fruits. The more famous crumbles are rhubarb and blackberry.
