How to Join Your Local Library

Libraries are an excellent resource provided by the government to offer free access to books, music and other materials. Many libraries now also provide internet access as well as videos and DVDS. Public libraries are open to all, and anyone can browse or read books on the premises. If you would like to borrow books, music or films to take home, you can join your local library by completing a simple application process.

1. Determine your borough. You can join the library in any borough (also known as council or local authority) where you live, work or study. If you don't know which borough is yours, you can find out on the UK government's website.
2. Find libraries in your area. Once you've determined your borough, you can visit your council's website to find out the location of your nearest library. You can also search for local libraries by postcode on the UK government's website or the People's Network website.
3. Check your local authority's requirements. Most libraries will require you to be 16 years of age or older and able to show proof of your name and current address. Visit your council's website for the specific requirements.
4. Gather the necessary documents. You will need to show proof of your name and address. Accepted documents usually include a bank or credit card, current driving licence, recent utilities bill or bank statement from the last six months. Check your council's requirements and be sure to bring at least two accepted documents.
5. Complete the application. You will need to provide your name, date of birth and contact details, as well as your proof of identification and address. You may also be asked for other personal details, an indication of how you would like to be contacted by the library, and information to determine if you might qualify for any concessionary rates. Some councils may allow you to download the application from their website so you can complete it before visiting, but you can also pick it up in person and complete it on the spot.
6. Start using the library. Most libraries can approve your application straight away and give you a library card which allows you to begin borrowing immediately.
