Search the regular internet search engines, like google, yahoo, and aol. Make sure that you type in free. you will get plenty of ads for nonsense, so be specific and use quotes (example "free plants"
Step2
Try craigslist in your area. Search craigslist.org when it sends you to the main page, go t the right side and click on the area closest to where you live. OR you can go the middle section where it says SALE find the free tab and click.
Step3
Go to nearby florists/wholesale florists at the end of seasons. They will be more than willing to give away or greatly reduce the prices of items that are out of season or that need to be planted right away

I liked the article. I myself have used the web to find free stuff at different times. I also have found that a lot of persons, even my co workers and family,do not know there are free things available.

You could add to this article: Talk to any gardeners you know. Often they offer to give you a cutting or a division of a plant that you admire.

This is a wonderful article and something that I would have NEVER thought of. Yes, I'm also saving it as a favorite and will use it when I get ready to start planting.
