How to Write a Cover Letter for an Entry-Level Position

Even an entry-level position needs, along with your resume, a cover letter to introduce yourself to the prospective employer. You will make your first impression with the cover letter, so it's important to sound professional. Here's how to write a cover letter for an entry-level position.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Visit the Microsoft website. In the sidebar on the right hand side, click on "Download & Trials."

  2. Step 2

    View the screenshots on the following page and click on "Office Templates" in the middle of the page.

  3. Step 3

    Scroll down on the next page and you will see a bulleted list under the heading "Browse Templates."

  4. Step 4

    Click on "Letters" to open a list of different letter templates.

  5. Step 5

    Choose "Cover letters" on the next page. This will pull up a list of different types of cover letters for all kinds of jobs. Locate the Entry-level cover letter and click on it.

  6. Step 6

    View the sample cover letter and click "Download Now" to create your own cover letter. Accept the service agreement on the next page. The template will download onto your computer.

  7. Step 7

    Change the contact information at the top of the letter, including your name, address and the date. In the next section, fill out the recipient's name, title, company and address as indicated.

  8. Step 8

    Fill in the recipient name after the salutation. You should always use Mr. or Ms. and both the first and last name of the person you are sending the letter. If you do not know the person's name, replace the information with "To Whom It May Concern:"

  9. Step 9

    Read through the body of the letter and change it to reflect information about yourself. In the first paragraph you should state the position you are applying for. In the second and third paragraphs, you should explain why you are qualified for the job.

  10. Step 10

    Conclude with your contact information. Always include the line, "Thank you for your consideration."

  11. Step 11

    Replace [Your Name] at the bottom with your full name. Print the letter and don't forget to sign it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be engaging but not wordy in the body of your cover letter. Try to make your work experience and skills seems relevant to the position.
  • Don't make a cover letter longer than one page.
