How to Antique Glaze Furniture

In an age of do-it-yourselfers, more and more individuals are tackling home decor and furniture refurbishing, such as creating an antique glaze effect on furniture. This glazed finish combines the look of antique white paint, a wood-toned stain and a clear coat of varnish. Here's how to get an antique glaze. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Clean and dry the piece of furniture you will be working with. Sand or remove paint as needed.

    • 2

Purchase a primer tinted for the base coat you plan to use. Stick with a color in the "vanilla" hue of off-white or antique white.

    • 3

Apply two coats of primer, sanding between coats as necessary.

    • 4

Apply a vinyl coat and again sand.

    • 5

Choose a brown glaze for wood. Most are oil-based and can be mixed together to create custom colors. Apply the glaze all over, rubbing it around and leaving it heavier in the areas you to be darker. Wipe off areas where you want less contrast. T-shirt rags work well for this application; brushes can be used as well.

    • 6

Let your layer of glaze dry for at least 1 hour, but no more than 6 hours.

    • 7

Apply another coat of WW vinyl sealer over the glaze. Sand and finish.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sand edges once layers are dry to create an even more worn, antique look.

  • Do not use wood stain instead of glaze. Glaze is specially formulated to work between layers, stain is not. Using stain will not produce the desired effect.
