How to Become a State Trooper in Wisconsin

Serve residents and visitors as you patrol and protect the highways of Wisconsin as a state trooper. There are many attractions and vacation spots in Wisconsin, and the highways are often heavy with tourists, especially in the summer months. There will not be much down time when you become a Wisconsin state trooper.

Things You'll Need:

  • Valid Wisconsin driver's license
  1. Step 1

    Be 18 years old and have a Wisconsin high school diploma or GED.

  2. Step 2

    Contact Cathie Cunningham Wisconsin DOT at 608-266-3425 to get all the necessary information regarding applications.

  3. Step 3

    Go through the fingerprinting process and successfully pass a background check to rule out any convictions.

  4. Step 4

    Take and pass psychological and physical exams given by physicians approved by the State of Wisconsin.

  5. Step 5

    Complete and pass five phases of the physical agility test. These include firearms practice, obstacle course, traffic aid and rescue.

  6. Step 6

    Complete Steps 1 through 5 to be eligible to enter the Training Academy in Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, for the 21-week process to finish becoming a Wisconsin state trooper.

Tips & Warnings
  • Build a physical fitness regime before you go through the process of becoming a Wisconsin state trooper. This practice will give you a head start in the training schedule.
  • You must not have more than a 20 decibel loss of hearing in either ear to qualify to become a Wisconsin state trooper.
