How to Become a State Trooper in Colorado

"Courteous but Firm" is the motto of the Colorado State Patrol and when you become a Colorado State Trooper you may find yourself in a situation where you will have to uphold this motto. Follow a few guidelines to become a Colorado State Trooper.

Things You'll Need:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Colorado driver's license valid at the time of hire
  1. Step 1

    Obtain an application from the Colorado Department of Public Safety. The main Human Resource office for CDPS is located at 700 Kipling in Lakewood, Colorado.

  2. Step 2

    Submit your completed application and within three weeks you will hear from Human Resources. This department will advise you on where you can pick up your pre-exam materials. Fill out the forms and return to Human Resources.

  3. Step 3

    Proceed to the polygraph test, background check and job suitability exam. After these are successfully finished your name will be put on a list to be considered for the training academy.

  4. Step 4

    Receive an employment offer to become a Colorado State Trooper and the next phase begins. This will include a psychological exam, physical exam, drug test and agility test. Recruits who successfully pass the above mentioned tests will be offered a spot as State Patrol Interns and issued a date to start the training academy.

  5. Step 5

    Work at the training academy for 22 weeks. You will live at the academy for the first seven weeks.

Tips & Warnings
  • As a Colorado State Trooper you are eligible for 50 percent discount on tuition at state community colleges.
  • Someone at Human Resources will phone and let you know how to schedule Your Written Cadet Examination after you have left your completed paperwork with the HR office.
  • Classes you will take at the Academy include driving, crowd control, firearm training and CPR. These are only a few of the courses offered and by the time you graduate from training, you will have become a Colorado State Trooper.
  • You could be asked to relocate anywhere in the state of Colorado once you complete training.
