With varieties of deer, bear, grouse, turkey and waterfowl, Minnesota is a great place to find lots of quality game. Getting a hunting license in Minnesota takes a little bit of preparation and planning, but the time and effort is well worth it. Follow a few steps to complete the licensing process.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Start the license process early. Because Minnesota is a highly desired hunting ground, it uses lotteries to distribute many of its licenses. Get an early start to increase your chances of getting the license you want. The state gives out only 182 permits for spring prairie turkey hunting, for instance, so apply for your license and permit in time to beat the rush.
Step2
Decide on and prioritize the type of game you want, so you have a good chance of getting the desired license and permit. Keep in mind that with many animals there are multiple sub-seasons, so if you don't get the license you want, try again in the next sub-season.
Step3
Make sure you're eligible for a license. Minnesota legislation requires that hunters born on or after December 31, 1979, need to complete a hunter's safety and education course. Hunters born before the cutoff date do not need to complete the course to get a hunting license.
Step4
Determine your relevant hunter status. Minnesota offers a wide range of licenses. Military archers and muzzleloader landowners in Minnesota, for example, do not need to pay a fee to hunt in the state. Check the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources' comprehensive website for information regarding license types. (See Resources below.)
Step5
Buy your license online to save time. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources uses an effective licensing purchase system that lets you buy your license in minutes. If you are a resident, have documents to prove your residency.
