North Dakota is a "shall issue" state. A carry and conceal weapon (CCW) permit will be issued to anyone who qualifies and serves as a National Instant Criminal System (NICS) check. The issuing authority is the Chief of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI). The following steps will show how to obtain a CCW license in North Dakota.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Be 18 years of age and complete an application from a CCW Permit Test Administrator, your local police department, sheriff's office or North Dakota BCI.
Step2
Submit the application to your sheriff's office and make an appointment with a CCW Permit Test Administrator to take a written test on firearms knowledge.
Step3
Pass the written test and return to the sheriff's office. The test fee is determined by the administrator.
Step4
Provide the results from your test, two sets of fingerprints, two color photos and the required fees. There will be one fee for the photo and fingerprints and a second one for the permit fee.
Step5
Have your sheriff sign the permit and if you live in a city, also by the chief of police. Your NICS number will be on the permit, which is good for three years. You do not need to take the written test when you renew your permit.
Step6
Carry your permit whenever you have a concealed weapon. You must provide your permit to a law enforcement official upon demand. Your CCW permit does not allow you to carry a concealed weapon to bars, casinos, public buildings or gatherings.
