Montana is a "shall issue" state. A carry and conceal weapon (CCW) permit will be issued to anyone who qualifies, but you will not be able to carry a concealed weapon within city limits, railroad camps or mining camps. The issuing authority is the county sheriff. The following steps will show how to obtain a CCW license in Montana.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Have a CCW permit from any state. In this case, no other steps would be necessary because Montana recognizes CCW permits from all states.
Step2
Be 18 years old and a resident of Montana for the past six months. You must also pass a criminal background check. Montana Statute 45-8-321 provides the details on this.
Step3
Obtain an application form from your county sheriff. Submit the completed application, a copy of the training certificate, your driver's license or state identification, a photograph and the application fee to your sheriff's department. Your sheriff also might want fingerprints and charge a fee for that.
Step4
Receive your CCW permit within 60 days. If it is denied, the sheriff must state the reason in writing, and you may appeal the decision with the District Court.
Step5
Renew your CCW every four years by paying the renewal fee. You are still prohibited from carrying a concealed weapon in any government building (including public schools), banks, bars and trains.
Step6
Present your permit upon demand by a law enforcement official and always keep a photo ID when carrying a concealed weapon.
