How to Get a Permit to Carry a Concealed Weapon in Delaware

By eHow Legal Editor

Rate: (4 Ratings)

Delaware upholds the right to bear arms; however, the right to conceal a weapon in public carries limitations. The Delaware County Superior Court issues concealed weapons permits at its discretion. A person must establish the reason that a permit is needed. Delaware recognizes certain other state-issued permits through reciprocity agreements.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Training course
  • Application
  • Five personal references
  • Fee

Step1
Take the required firearms training courses from a recognized organization. This is a one-time requirement. Instruction on shooting, handling, storage, state laws and protection techniques are necessary.
Step2
Get your instructor or school to sign a notarized certificate vouching that you concluded weapons training both in class and fired at least 100 rounds on a range. Submit this at the time of application.
Step3
Prove you are 18 years or older. A driver's license will suffice.
Step4
Apply in writing for a concealed weapons permit in your county of residence. See the prothonotary (chief clerk) of the superior court. Put in writing that you want a permit for both personal and property protection or just one or the other type. Do this within 15 days of the superior court's next term.
Step5
Select five personal references from your county. The people you choose must sign a certificate confirming your age and vouching for your reputation and moral character. They must agree that carrying a concealed weapon is needed for your protection.
Step6
Affirm your application under oath or writing with an authorized state officer.
Step7
Pay a fee then wait for the results.

on 5/19/2008 This article is inaccurate and incomplete.

1. The safety course isn't required until you receive your decision from the court. Being $225 - $250, for some, it's better to wait.

2. You must publish your full name and home address in a paper that receives 33% of the subscribership in your ZIP. ($74 for the News Journal).

3. You must be fingerprinted by the State Police ($69) within 30 days of applying.

4. You'll need two passport photos ($15).

The safety course isn't required until a decision on your application has been made by the Superior Court Judge -- seeing as this course is $225-$250, it's worthwhile to mention that the course can be postponed until you receive your decision.

Second, it omits the fact that you also need to arrange to have your full name and home address posted in a newspaper which receives at least 33% of the circulation in your ZIP code... this reduces most of us to the News Journal. This costs about $74 and must be done 10 days prior to filing your application. The paper will send you notarized proof.

You'll need two passport style photographs (About $15 at a camera store).

You need to arrange to have yourself fingerprinted ($69) by the Delaware State Police -- appointment only -- once you have this receipt and all of your other paperwork IN TRIPLICATE (minus the safety course requirement if you so choose), you may file your notarized application ($34.50).

The five character references are required; however, they do not need to know, nor agree as to why you're making application.
