Fishing is one of the most popular outdoor activities in which people partake today. Whether a novice or an old hand, knot tying is an integral factor in whether or not your next fishing trip is enjoyable or a nightmare. Perhaps the easiest knot to tie, the Trilene Knot, is also one of the most important knots to master.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fishing line
  • Fishing rod
  • Nail clippers (or scissors)
  • Terminal tackle (hooks, lures, fast clips)
  1. Step 1

Hold the hook in your left hand while taking the line in your right hand and threading it through the eye of the hook. Bring about five inches of line through.

  2. Step 2

Bring the tag end of the line back through the eye of the hook in the same direction, in the same fashion as before. You should now have a doubled loop around the eye of the hook.

  3. Step 3

Take the tag end and start wrapping or coiling it around the main line coming off your reel, close to the double loop. Wrap it around five times, making five tight coils around the main line.

  4. Step 4

Take the tag end of the line and bring it through the center-most loop (of the doubled loop).

  5. Step 5

Pull the tag end firmly and consistently without stopping until you have it firmly secured to the hook or lure.

Tips & Warnings
  • In cold weather, wear thin surgical gloves. This will help keep your hands and fingers warm while still allowing the dexterity needed for tying knots.
  • Before going fishing, make sure you check with your state or local department of natural resources (or applicable governing body) to purchase or determine if you must purchase a fishing license.
  • Make sure you know and understand the fishing laws and regulations where you will be fishing. Many places do not allow treble hooks or hooks with barbs.
