How to Tie a Uni Knot

If you are a novice fisherman or a seasoned veteran, a mastery of the basics is an often overlooked but necessary skill to maintain. Tying a good knot should be considered one of the most important things to learn before making that first cast. One of the easiest knots to master and the most versatile is the uni knot.

Things You'll Need

  • Fishing line
  • Fishing rod
  • Terminal tackle (hooks, lures, fast clips)
  • Nail clippers (or scissors)

Instructions

    • 1

Take the tag end of your fishing line and thread it through the eye of a fishing hook or lure.

    • 2

Run the tag end up and parallel along the main line.

    • 3

Bend the tag end back part way down and make a loop crossing over both lines with the tag end.

    • 4

Take the entire length of line that makes up the tag end and wrap it around both sections of the line that passes through the eye of the terminal tackle and just before the big loop.

    • 5

Pull the tag end straight up and parallel along the main line going into the reel. Pull it steadily and tightly.

    • 6

Slide the knot snugly against the eye, or leave a small loop to increase the action of the lure if you are using a lure rather than a hook.

    • 7

Clip the excess line from the tag end to about 1/8 of an inch to the knot.

Tips & Warnings

  • In cold weather, wear thin surgical gloves. This will help keep your hands and fingers warm while still allowing the dexterity needed for tying knots.

  • Before going fishing, make sure you check with your state or local department of natural resources (or applicable governing body) to purchase or determine if you must purchase a fishing license.

  • Make sure that you know the regulations regarding hooks and lines in the area where you will fish. Many places allow only 1-2 lines in the water per angler, and many have outlawed treble hooks or hooks with barbs.
