How to Become a Roadie

A roadie is a specially trained technician who may work in a variety of capacities for a band. They can be responsible for anything from lighting and stage design to band equipment and pyrotechnics. If the life of a rock star has always intrigued you, but you lack musical talent, roadying might just be the job for you.

Instructions

1. Decide what capacity you'd like to help the band. The main responsibilities of the roadie can include: lighting, stage design, instrument maintenance and security. Determine which areas interest you most and decide what type of roadie you'd like to be.

2. Make yourself knowledgeable about various musical instruments and the electrical equipment used at concerts.

3. Gain experience. Volunteer to help at small clubs and venues in your area. You may meet local bands who are looking for help and don't mind if you lack much experience.

4. Consider going to school to learn about something like audio engineering or stage design. You may also consider working with a lighting or audio company in your area.

5. Put your name and profile on a website such as RoadieJobs.

Tips & Warnings

• Most roadies start off touring with local bands and work their way up the ladder to booking tours with bigger bands. Don't get discouraged if you don't immediately get snatched up by an established band.

• If you tour with the band, you may be away from home for long periods.
