How to Organize a Critical Mass Bike Ride

Organizers of critical mass bikes must consider legal and regulatory issues, plan for the weather, and gather enough bikers to make the event worthwhile. Use this article as your checklist.

Instructions

1. Keep an eye on weather reports. Try to plan a day when it won't be pouring down rain (or snow or hail). If it rains anyway, don't blame yourself: not even the meteorologist gets it right every time.

2. Contact local planners to resolve any permit or ordinances issues. Some local officials are more understanding than others. Try to "pitch" your critical mass ride as a community event and be prepared to make some concessions.

3. Get the word out. Post on web forums or on cork boards at local businesses.

4. Recruit groups, like university clubs, church groups or any avid biking clubs.

5. Be present and accessible at the event. Every event needs a leader. What critical mass events don't need is confusion. Have a route planned out and stick to it. Arrive early to help newbies with questions. Appoint a designated person or persons to "lead" the trail of bikers. This makes the difference between a successful critical mass bike ride and a wobbly one.
