Every parent should know how to give CPR to their child in case of emergency. CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and it is important that people know the steps one should take if CPR needs to be administered. Follow these tips and practice on a large pillow if needed. By knowing these CPR steps, you may save a life someday. Please note, these instructions are for use on a person who has stopped breathing and is unresponsive.

From Quick Guide: All About First Aid
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure the airway is open when an adult needs CPR. The airway may be blocked by food or another obstruction. When you take a CPR course, you will be taught how to clear the airway so that the person will be ready for breathing.

  2. Step 2

Begin rescue breathing. When performing on an adult, do 30 chest compressions and then breathe twice into an adult's mouth. Use both hands when doing chest compressions and place them in between the nipples.

  3. Step 3

Place your mouth on their mouth and blow twice. Remember to blow into their mouth while plugging their nose at the same time. Listen for breathing and start again.

  4. Step 4

Perform only 5 compressions on babies and animals and only use 2 fingers to compress their chest. Only breathe once and start over.

  5. Step 5

Understand that by performing CPR, you can stop the damage from happening to the brain. The person, baby or animal can be fully resuscitated when the paramedics arrive in time.

  6. Step 6

Keep doing CPR for as long as you can. You cannot hurt the patient and can only save their life or prevent brain damage. Try to keep as focused as you can on the CPR steps you are performing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Attempt to wake the victim BEFORE performing CPR. If the person responds, then CPR is not necessary.
  • It is extremely important that you check to see if the victim is breathing before attempting CPR. If the victim is unconscious, but still breathing, then do NOT perform CPR, as you can do more harm than good.

on 4/27/2009 I am a prior service medic and a certified EMT. I can not count how many times I have performed CPR. There are many things to take into account when assessing and treating a casualty; this article is extremely inaccurate. An online article such as this cannot replace a CPR course taught by a certified instructor.

on 8/15/2008 I am in total agreement with Fizzlepop. You cannot learn CPR off the Internet - even if outlined in the above article or by one of the many new "online CPR courses". CALL YOUR LOCAL HEALTH OR FIRE DEPARTMENT AND GET CERTIFED IN A CLASS SPONOSORED BY THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION OR THE AMERICAN RED CROSS.
