Instructions

    • 1

Gather all the documentation you will need to prepare your tax return, including last year's return, 1099s, W-2 forms, receipts, personal information, income from investments and medical expenses.

    • 2

Print out a copy of all your financial transactions for the previous year if you keep track of that with a personal financial software program. The report will save you the trouble of having to sort through canceled checks.

    • 3

Organize your information by categories, such as personal data, income, expenses, deductions and medical costs. Have a checklist for each one and mark off the information once you have it.

    • 4

Use last year's return as a guide and insert the new data. If you are using income tax software input your data into the appropriate forms. Double check your calculations to ensure your return is error-free.

    • 5

Mark the appropriate box if you would like your refund directly deposited into your bank account.

    • 6

Sign and date your state and federal returns along with your spouse, if you are filing a joint return. Make copies of both returns and any attachments for your records.

    • 7

Give your return a "once over" before putting it in the mail or filing it electronically.

    • 8

Call the refund hotline (800-829-1954) to find out the status of your refund. Allow three weeks for processing before inquiring.
