Step 1
Wear comfortable, but fitted clothing. Fitted clothing allows the instructor to see your form during the exercises and make sure that you are using proper form. However, you want the clothing to be comfortable so you will be able to concentrate on the exercises and not your clothes. Keep in mind that you'll be doing a lot of mat work.

Step 2
Find a class and instructor that you like. You may need to try out several to find one that fits your needs. A good class will be one where the instructor explains modifications and advanced moves so that you can go at your own pace as a beginner, but also know how to make the exercises more challenging as you progress.

Step 3
Consider purchasing your own mat for use in class. Many classes and studios provide mats but the downside is that they are used by countless other people and they may not smell the greatest or be the cleanest.
-
Step 4
Stay focused and concentrate on your breathing. Pilate seeks to unite mind and body to reduce stress and anxiety. By focusing on your breathing and your muscles, you'll be able to let go of tension and concerns.

Step 5
Go with the flow by avoiding jerky, sudden movements. Instead, go slow and try to achieve a fluid motion. Think of the exercises as performing a graceful dance.
