Step 1
Make a list. Consider how many days you will camping and compile an inventory of all the things you need on the trip. Check it off as you pack.
-
Step 2
Include enough clothing for each day of your vacation, plus a few extras in case of rain. Check the weather for the days you're camping and choose clothing appropriate for the temperature and the activities. Bring rain gear even if it's not forecasted for your trip.
-
Step 3
Pack perishable food in coolers with plenty of ice. Place the items at the bottom of the cooler and top with the ice so they don't spoil. Consider using dry ice, which lasts much longer that regular ice. Take easy to cook, convenient items that don't take up much space such as lunch meat, hot dogs and pre-made burgers.
-
Step 4
Keep non-perishable food items like bread and snacks in a plastic box or large tub with a lid. Store the food in this container while camping as well—they're more critter-proof than bags. Take portable, quick snacks such as granola bars, fruit and vegetables.
-
Step 5
Compile meal essentials such as cookware, disposable plates, silverware and napkins. If using a propane stove, take enough fuel for your trip as well. Pack trash bags to dispose of waste(or take home for recycling).
-
Step 6
Gather safety gear such as flashlights, lanterns, battery-operated radios, waterproof matches, first aid kits and plenty of extra batteries. Take a compass if you're headed to a remote area or plan to hike during your trip. Charge your cell phone or take a car-charger for emergencies.
-
Step 7
Protect yourself from bites and potential illnesses by packing lots of insect repellent, citronella candles and anti-itch lotions.
