How to Start a Family Newsletter

A newsletter is a great device for sharing fond memories, latest accomplishments, and other important news with your extended family. If you aren't quite sure where to begin, relax, you're in the right place. By following a few simple steps, you can create a stronger family bond as you celebrate your lives and each other.

1. If your family is small, contact each member individually to find out whether they are interested in contributing. For larger families, send an email, addressed to all of them, asking for feedback.

2. Get organized. Since it was your idea, you're the editor, and you should choose an assistant editor if you need help. Pick a name for the publication, choose a format, and decide how elaborate your presentation should be.

3. Decide on content. Your family can help you with this so that the newsletter appeals to everyone. No matter what you include, always keep your news positive and never publish any malicious gossip.

4. Figure out a delivery method. You can attach your family newsletter in an email or even upload it to a no-cost web page. It will keep your production costs low, as people can download and print it themselves. Remember though, not everyone has access to the Internet. Another option is to send it through the regular mail.

5. Set up a schedule. The best part of producing your family's newsletter is that you can decide when to publish. Publish at least 3-4 times per year and, especially, around the holidays. You can generate great topics for people to write about, including their favorite holiday memories, recipes and gift ideas. Include holiday-themed photos.
