Abyssinian cats are thought to be descendents of the cats that the ancient Egyptians immortalized in carvings and pyramids. These sleek, regal felines are loyal and quickly become attached to their owners. They are generally hearty, easy to care for and make lovely family pets.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit your vet. Your Abyssinian will need regular vaccinations and ongoing health care from your veterinarian.

  2. Step 2

Buy high-quality food. Good cat food is high in protein and has balanced fatty acids. It will help your Abyssinian stay healthy and energetic.

  3. Step 3

Provide dry food three to five times a week to help your Abyssinian avoid gum disease and expensive dental care.

  4. Step 4

Groom your Abyssinian occasionally. Brush and comb his hair and then rub him with a damp chamois to enhance the shine of his fur. When he is shedding, petting him with a rubber grooming mitt will remove dead hairs from his coat.

  5. Step 5

Bathe your Abyssinian when she is shedding. Use a good pet shampoo, towel dry and let her air dry. If you begin bathing her when she is young, she will submit more easily to the process.

  6. Step 6

Give plenty of cat kisses to your Abyssinian. To give a cat kiss, look at your cat and when she meets your glance, squint your eyes a little and blink slowly. If she copies your behavior, you have exchanged a cat kiss.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never hit your cat. Striking your Abyssinian will only teach him to fear you. If you need to discipline your cat, clap or hiss loudly to startle him.
