Be consistent with discipline. The pekingese is an intelligent but willful dog. You must be the boss one every day, or he will use the opportunity to claim dominance. Pekingese are more difficult to house train than other breeds, so consistency again is a must.

Brush your dog's hair daily. The pekingese has a thick double coat that is prone to tangling and matting. Brushing is essential.

Consider a puppy cut, if your dog is not a show dog. This short haircut reduces tangles and the need for constant brushing. A shorter haircut also helps with housecleaning since pekingese are heavy shedders.

Clean the dog's ears daily. You must also clean the creases on your pet's face to prevent fungal infections, and clean the dirt from the pores around the eyes.

Take your dog for walks, or provide other forms of play. They are good apartment dogs, but they do need exercise.

Make sure that your dog does not become overheated. Pekingese, because of their long and heavy coats, are prone to heatstroke. Limit the amount of outside activity and provide plenty of water.

Protect your dog against health risks. Eye problems and back problems are common with this breed. Protect them from rough play or head injury because their eyes can pop out of their sockets.
