The Komondor is a large white dog with fur that hangs in long cords. This hard-working animal is often used for herding sheep or protecting livestock. The Komondor is loyal to family members but suspicious of strangers. Because of its temperament and unusual coat, this breed requires special care.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Separate the cords of the Komondor once every three or four weeks. Their long fur collects dirt and debris so it can be hard to keep them clean. After washing them, it can take up to two days for them to completely dry.

  2. Step 2

Trim the fur on the bottom of the feet to prevent infection and keep burrs from sticking to the fur.

  3. Step 3

Be strong when training this dog. It is a strong-willed dog that is easily bored and does not tolerate repetition well. Be consistent in discipline while at the same time finding new ways to teach old concepts.

  4. Step 4

Provide your Komondor with work to do or with plenty of exercise. Because they are easily bored, their excess energy can be channeled into destructive activities and loud barking.

  5. Step 5

Socialize Komondors early and often. They are very protective of family members are often suspicious and intolerant of strangers. If they are not used to other people, they can quickly become aggressive towards strangers or anyone who is a perceived threat.

  6. Step 6

Check the skin often for fleas and ticks. Because they have a long coat, these parasites can be hidden from sight. If you find ticks or fleas, use powder or shampoo designed to get rid of them.

  7. Step 7

Clean the ears often, trim the hair in the ears and use ear powder to prevent infection.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can use box fans to hasten the drying process.
  • Even with socialization, Komondors need to be controlled at all times when around other people.
  • Test tick and flea treatment on a small area of fur, because some products can discolor the Komondor's white coat or irritate their skin.
  • Because of their great size and strength and potentially aggressive behavior Komondors are not well suited for children.
