How to Care for a Havanese

Havanese weren't allowed to be owned by anyone outside of the upper classes in their native Cuba, and they were not offered for sale. The only way to get one was as a gift. Today, they are available to everyone, although they are one of the most expensive breeds in the world. You can care of your investment by following these steps.

1. Brush the coat at least twice a week. Brushing is important to remove dead fur, since these dogs shed little, if at all. Brush from underneath the fur, and comb it in layers.

2. Spray a light layer of oil on the coat to prevent hairs from splitting and static buildup, especially if you live in a dry or cold climate.

3. Remove mats and tangles before bathing. Moisten the mats with oil and rub between your fingers to separate the tangles. Shampoo the coat and rinse well. Apply oil or coat conditioner.

4. Trim the nails every two weeks. Trim the fur around and between the toes. Clean the ears regularly to prevent infection.

5. Watch for eye problems. Havanese are prone to retinal degeneration, blindness and cataracts. Your veterinarian can help you diagnose and treat these problems early on.

6. Use a calm tone of voice when training this dog. It is quick to learn but is very sensitive your tone of voice.
