According to the Center for Disease Control, one in 150 children is diagnosed with autism. This severe developmental disorder appears at birth or in early childhood and causes strange and often misunderstood behavior. However, thanks to research conducted over the past few decades, many helpful treatment options have been designed and applied with great success. There are many ways that you can contribute to autism research to help diagnose, treat and eventually prevent autism.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make a donation to a reputable organization, like the Autism Research Institute. Before donating, confirm the legitimacy of the organization through the Better Business Bureau.

  2. Step 2

Purchase note cards featuring miniature copies of original paintings by award-winning autistic artist Mark Rimland, who has been featured on national television. You can purchase these cards through the Autism Research Institute's store.

  3. Step 3

Donate an automobile or other vehicle to the Autism Society of America. Cars, trucks, SUVs, boats, RVs and real estate are accepted and help fund vital programs. The society will usually pick up the vehicle, and the donation should qualify for a tax deduction.

  4. Step 4

Involve your employer in a combined campaign with a nonprofit autism research organization. For example, the Autism Society of America participates in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC 11808), United Way and Independent Charities of America. Contact the organization first to obtain all of the details before approaching your employer.

  5. Step 5

Participate in a local fund-raising event. Depending on your area, the fund-raising event might be sponsored by a children's hospital or other regional medical center or by a local chapter of a national autism organization. If you cannot find a fund-raising event close to home, start your own!

  6. Step 6

Attend a conference, like the Autism Society of America's annual National Conference, held every summer, or the Autism Research Institute's Defeat Autism Now annual fall conference. Conferences provide an opportunity for everyone in the autism community to meet, share experiences, learn about advances in autism research and brainstorm for the future.

  7. Step 7

Stay current in research breakthroughs by browsing online medical news websites like Medical News Today or by subscribing to an autism research newsletter.
