1. Select a white Christmas tree. Keep in mind the amount of available space you have for your tree. For larger areas, purchase a 4- to 8-foot tree. For smaller spaces, consider options such as a tabletop Christmas tree.

2. Purchase enough strings of lights to cover your tree evenly. White lights provide a more formal look, while multicolor lights give a bit more of a childlike feel. Consider purchasing single-color lights such as green or red.

3. Find ornaments that complement your lights. There are hundreds of types of ornaments available, including glass balls, figurines, keepsakes, homemade ornaments and more.
