Step 1
Find a pair of gloves that has the correct finger length for your child. You may have to try on several pairs to get the best fit. Ill-fitting gloves are frustrating for toddlers.
-
Step 2
Choose a pair of gloves that extends up and under the toddler's coat sleeves. Some have elastic cuffs that fit tightly around the wrist. Short or loose-fitting gloves mean snow can leak into the gap between them and the coat and that spells trouble for you and your child.
-
Step 3
Look for gloves that have an insulated interior and a waterproof exterior or inner layer. Keeping the toddler's hands warm and dry is a necessity.
-
Step 4
Pass up the mittens after your child is 2 years old. At that age, they want to play in the snow like the "big kids" and it's next to impossible to hold or throw a snowball with mittens. Frustrated toddlers mean temper tantrums, which then means it's time to go back in the house.

Step 5
Try a pair of gloves that extend to the elbows such as L-Bows. These slip on over the coat and have secure elastic that fits snugly just below the elbow. No snow or cold air will penetrate that barrier.
