How to Survive Bikram Yoga

You finally let your friend talk you into trying Bikram Yoga despite the fact that everyone else you know laughs at the mention of people writhing in 100-degree heat. Now, you're standing in that hot room sweating from pores you didn't know you had and wondering if anyone has ever died doing this or if you'll be the first. Here are some keys to surviving your first Bikram Yoga class.

Instructions

    • 1

Dress properly. If you try a big T-shirt in Bikram Yoga like you wear to the gym, you'll have a face full of cotton the first time you try to reach your toes. Wear close-fitting yoga clothes that allow you to bend and stretch easily. No matter your size, you will want to wear as little as possible to beat the heat.

    • 2

Stay calm. The heat and exertion may cause you to panic and even fear for your life. Know that people in worse shape than you have lived through a Bikram Yoga class. Stay calm, breathe deeply and focus on your own eyes in the mirror. Try not to think about how hot it is.

    • 3

Drink plenty of water. Even if you stand still for the whole class, you will sweat buckets because it's so hot. Drink water before class, and don't eat anything. You'll appreciate having an empty stomach when you think you may be taking your last breath. Bring water to class and drink as much as you can hold when you're instructed to drink.

    • 4

Make no extra movements. The idea of any yoga practice is holding each pose as long as possible without moving. In Bikram, this is especially important. Don't waste energy fixing your hair or adjusting your shorts between poses.

    • 5

Learn the rest positions. During the standing poses, the rest position is your starting position. Standing with your feet together and your arms straight down by your sides, wait for the instructor to begin the next pose. Anytime you feel you can't continue your yoga, assume this resting posture and slow your breathing. During the sitting poses, the rest position is lying on your back, feet together, arms sraight down by your sides and palms up.
