There are some professional organizations that provide a good starting point if you want to find out more about becoming a home inspector.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit websites like the National Association of Certified Home Inspectors (NACHI) or the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI). Both these sites offer courses on home inspection.

  2. Step 2

Talk to local home inspectors to find out about their experience, what courses they took or what home inspection courses are most relevant to laws in your state. Consult your local real estate agent to find out what they look for most in a home inspector.

  3. Step 3

Find out about the governing laws in your state, not only for home inspection license but what a home inspection entails. Learning this information will help you pick a course that fits your needs.

  4. Step 4

Think about how you learn best. Buy materials and read or watch them on your own works best to move at your own pace. An online course may be for you if your time is limited. Try an on-site class for a more developed course that will possibly help you start your own home inspection business.

  5. Step 5

Invest in a course to help you achieve your goals of becoming a home inspector. Consider your willingness to follow through with the course. Otherwise you may want to put your money elsewhere.

Tips & Warnings
  • NACHI's courses and quizzes are free. You can brush up on home inspection skills or find out where you're weak for free on the NACHI site.
  • ASHI offers three different ways to take courses. You can buy home inspection course materials, such as books and DVDs to go through at your own pace at home. You can take an online course or you can sign up for a local on-site home inspection course.
  • ASHI has information on its website about state regulations governing home inspection for all 50 states.

on 9/22/2007 Beware of the Realtors, who will only continue to give you business as a Home Inspector, if you don't "kill their deals". You must have a strong code of ethics to succeed in this field. Standing by the truth protects all parties involved.
