How to Know the Sex of a Baby

As soon as you tell everyone that you are pregnant, one of the first questions will inevitably be, "Are you going to find out the sex of the baby?" If you already know the sex of the baby, you'll be prepared when they ask.

Things You’ll Need:

• An ultrasound

1. Determine how far along you are in your pregnancy. You should start counting weeks beginning the first day of your last menstrual cycle, even though you probably didn't conceive until two weeks later.
2. Set an appointment at your obstetrician's office for an ultrasound. Your appointment for this should be around 20 weeks into your pregnancy so that the ultrasound can detect the baby's sex.
3. Tell the ultrasound technician that you want to know the gender of the baby. While they are performing the ultrasound and checking measurements and the general health of your baby, they can also find out the sex.
4. Hope your child is cooperating. If his hand is over his genitals or her legs are crossed, you might have to wait to find out.
5. Follow your gut. If the ultrasound technician says girl, but in your heart of hearts, you think you are having a boy, you might just be right. The technician might be mistaken.
6. Schedule a 3-D sonogram. There are many locations in large cities that will conduct 3-D sonograms for you to see your baby and determine the sex. This service is best performed between 28-32 weeks.

Tips & Warnings

• Check the gender predictions chart and compare when you do find out what the baby's sex is, just for fun.
• Don't rely on other people's predictions on how you are carrying to determine the sex of the baby. There are too many body types for that to be accurate.
• Don't be fooled by any wives tales. If they end up being correct, it is purely coincidence.
• The charge for a 3-D sonogram can range from $100-$300. You generally come away with multiple pictures and a videotape.
