Building a man's winter wardrobe is as simple as finding good-quality clothing that is also warm enough to withstand the snow and cold your climate offers. Assess your lifestyle and decide whether your job and activities require more khakis and sweaters or jeans and button-down shirts, then follow the steps to buy clothes to get you through the winter months.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Invest in a high-quality jacket or overcoat. Choose wool or down for exceptional warmth, in any length. Longer coats with collars and buttons will generally look more formal.

  2. Step 2

Buy at least one winter suit. A modern 3-button cut woolen suit in grey, black or navy is best for versatility.

  3. Step 3

Wear khakis and jeans that are made of wool or thicker jean fabric free from holes and tears. Obviously long pants will be warmer than shorts during the cold months.

  4. Step 4

Look for shirts and sweaters to wear layered over each other. Find cashmere sweaters thin enough to wear underneath button down shirts and sport jackets. Casual long sleeve shirts such as polos and button downs wear well with jeans or khakis, while dressier button down shirts wear well with suits.

  5. Step 5

Buy a blazer or tweed sport jacket to wear over a casual or dressy shirt for warmth and comfort. Vests—snug, loosely quilted, in neutrals or reds, are great worn over knits and casual shirts. Zip-front knit over shirts and hooded sweatshirts complete the layered wardrobe.

  6. Step 6

Invest in at least one good pair of boots. Suede or a similar material in black or brown can be worn in business and casual settings. Look for shoes that repel water and keep your feet warm.

  7. Step 7

Add a scarf, hat and gloves to your wardrobe to keep warm outside. A cashmere or wool blend is best for a scarf and hat, as long as it isn't too scratchy. Leather gloves are best for warmth and professional style.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep sweatshirts and pajama pants for lounging comfortably and casually around the house.
  • Buy good quality fabrics that will last a few seasons. Men's clothing styles do not expire as quickly as women's.
  • Darker colors and muted neutrals are best for winter. Wear brighter colors in your scarf or shirts while keeping everything else more neutral.
  • Use insoles for your boots to make them more comfortable throughout the winter.
  • Dress in multiple layers as temperatures change from indoors to outdoors.
