How to Earn a PHD in Art Education

Research the application process for the school you hoping to attend. Most colleges will require a specific score on the Graduate Record Examination, a graduate GPA of 3.5 or above, two years teaching experience, a professional writing sample, personal recommendations and an interview with faculty members in the art education department.

Plan your instruction. You will be required to complete 90 credit hours of curriculum with 36 hours of instruction in the area of specialization, 12 hours in your chosen minor, 15 hours of core studies, a minimum of 9 elective hours and then your dissertation.

Prepare for your residency. You will need to be in residence on campus. If you are working full time, you might be able to reside part time for a longer duration than those who are not working and are able to attend full time for a shorter duration.

Select your advisory committee. For most school you will need to select one graduate school faculty member for your committee chair, one faculty member from your major and one from your minor.

Take your examinations. You will need to take a written examination and an oral examination. You will take these examinations after completing all your course work. After passing these exams you will submit a "Nomination to Candidacy" form.

Complete your dissertation. You will have a set number of years to write your dissertation. You will need to submit a prospectus before beginning the dissertation, outlining exactly what you will be addressing in the study and how it will contribute to the theory and practice of Art Education.

Apply for graduation. You will need to submit your completed dissertation at least 30 days before your expected graduation date. You will have to present an oral dissertation defense and defend your research and findings. Your defense is open to the public.
