Hunting rabbits can test your patience, reflexes and knowledge. Follow these steps for a successful hunt.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shotgun
  • Rabbit hunting license
  • Beagles
  • Thorn-proof pants
  1. Step 1

Obtain any licenses necessary in the area to be hunted. Get permission from any landowner of private property considered for hunting rabbits.

  2. Step 2

Prepare all gear for hunting. Make certain the rifle used is clean and in perfect working order.

  3. Step 3

Have a very good pair of hunting pants or thorn-proof overalls. You'll need these for protection from briars and thorns when chasing a rabbit through underbrush.

  4. Step 4

Use beagles to flush out rabbits in very dense growth. These dogs will circle a rabbit and flush it out in the direction of the hunter.

  5. Step 5

Lead the rabbit with the barrel of the shotgun and shoot where the rabbit will be, not where he is. Try to take the rabbit as soon as he begins his run to avoid a long hunt in the brush.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check along fence lines or natural field divisions. These provide excellent rabbit hunting areas.
  • Look for areas that have been burned or cleared. Small thickets of pine saplings may hold many rabbits.
  • Never use lead shot to kill animals that will be eaten as lead can poison the meat.
  • Hunt rabbits in small groups of hunters to avoid serious injuries that may result from any misfires.
