Full-grown moose weigh more than four or five deer, have excellent hearing and an even better sense of smell. You need a plan if you are going to successfully hunt them. Here are some tips.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Hunting rifle
  • Appropriate hunting apparel
  • First-aid kit
  • Hunting and dressing gear
Step1
Obtain all moose hunting licenses and permits before setting off on the hunt.
Step2
Ensure that all weapons are fully cleaned and fully operational. A solid .30/06-hunting rifle with a telescopic sight adjusted for a 200-yard target will be satisfactory for hunting moose.
Step3
Pack a set of hunting orange gear as well as weather gear to acclimate to changing conditions. Wool outerwear is always a wise choice.
Step4
Take hunting equipment to allow for some field dressing of the animal after the moose has been culled. Saws, sharp knives and ropes will aid in the dressing of the moose. Remove as much meat as possible from the animal before leaving the carcass, and wrap meat in paper or plastic for best results.
Step5
Try to perfect moose mating calls before going into a hunt. Bulls respond well to cow rut calls during the fall and winter months.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take along a dependable GPS unit, and keep batteries fresh. Keep an extra set of batteries in a cool place.
  • Try stand-hunting moose. This involves long periods in a tree stand, yet allows the hunter a higher, clearer shot of the moose.
  • When field hunting, keep downwind of the moose being hunted to avoid the animal picking up human scent.
  • Always wear hunter orange to prevent being targeted by other hunters.
  • Identify the target before taking any shot.

on 8/21/2008 Hi, I'm deaf and residence of Alaska. I couldn't make a call for Moose which I can't hear to adjust it. Been taken one moose out of 10 years and it's only lucky I've got. Sit and wait for them to coming without any techniques. Any better way to make them come without call them? Please Email me Pipeliner209@yahoo.com
Thanks!, Marion Wood
